Want to fight global warming? Advanced method beyond reducing GHG

Updated: Nov 7, 2024

"Global warming" is a phenomenon that occurs because the Earth is enveloped by greenhouse gases, similar to being covered by a thick blanket. This prevents heat from radiating out as it normally would, causing the Earth's average temperature to rise and altering climatic conditions, which impacts living beings on this warming planet.

If we want to prevent the Earth from getting any hotter, there are two main approaches:

  1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to decrease the amount of gas that envelops the Earth, allowing more heat to escape.

  1. Manage solar radiation. Since sunlight brings heat, we can reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface. One method is by spraying reflective particles, such as sulfates, into the stratosphere (Stratospheric Aerosol Injection or SAI). Sulfate particles will reflect sunlight back into space from the sky, thereby reducing the amount of heat from sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface. Yay!

Although this idea is intriguing, many argue that doing so could have negative impacts on the environment, potentially affecting seasonal patterns and rainfall amounts in some areas, which would impact agriculture and could lead to severe long-term negative consequences.
