From Engineer to Visionary Leader in Computer Vision
Ajarn Fon graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Department of Computer Engineering at Chulalongkorn University. She began her career as a systems engineer at IBM, a leading computer company at the time, before pursuing a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the University of Southern California, USA. Her first research project was the design of neural networks to read handwritten digits. She then earned her Ph.D. in computer vision from the University of Maryland and worked as a researcher at the UMIACS Institute in Maryland, USA.
Ajarn Fon was also a visiting researcher at the ATRI Institute in Kyoto, Japan, before returning to teach and conduct research in Thailand. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, and heads the Chula PIC Lab. Her expertise in image processing and object motion detection has been applied in various industries, including surveillance, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, finance, and waste management.
Innovating to Meet Real Needs
Ajarn Fon is not only an academic who publishes in international journals, but she also translates her research into innovations that address the needs of Thailand. She has co-founded four companies that use computer technology, particularly computer vision, to solve business challenges across multiple industries. Her highly efficient method for separating objects from backgrounds in images has been internationally recognized and widely adopted. This achievement highlights her ability to connect research knowledge with real-world applications, benefiting society and the economy of the country.
